Postiguet beach

Twelve minutes on foot from Alirena. It's the city-centre beach, with all the good and the bad that comes with being the city-centre beach.

Postiguet beach

The Postiguet is the icon of Alicante. The crescent of fine sand at the foot of Santa Bárbara Castle, with the line of palm trees along the promenade and the harbour tower in the background. You'll see it from the Explanada and from almost every postcard of the city. It's twelve minutes on foot from Doctor Sapena street.

The good

  • Three minutes on foot from the Explanada and twelve from Alirena.
  • Blue flag. Lifeguard from 11:00 to 19:00 in season.
  • Showers, public toilets, sun-lounger hire, Red Cross kiosk.
  • Fine white sand, the water deepens gently.
  • Direct connection to the TRAM (Mercado or Postiguet station).

The bad

  • In August and on public holidays it fills up. Elbow to elbow from noon onwards.
  • It's a city beach: you hear the town, the N-332 traffic.
  • The water isn't the cleanest (harbour nearby, city nearby).
  • Street vendors pass by every four minutes in summer.

When to go

Best time. From 8:30 to 11:00 (empty and clean) or from 17:30 to 20:30 (golden light, fewer people, still warm).

Best day. Always a weekday. Sunday morning also works if you get there before 11:00.

Worst moment. A Saturday in August between noon and 17:00. That's just asking for punishment.

How to get there from Alirena

On foot: 12 minutes. You head out along Doctor Sapena towards Plaza de los Luceros, go down Calderón de la Barca, cross the Explanada and you're there. You're in the shade until the last 200 metres.

By TRAM: two stops from Luceros (line L1, €1.45). Not worth it unless you're with kids or luggage.

Beach bars at the Postiguet

  • The Red Cross kiosk. Healthier than it sounds: ice creams, soft drinks and sandwiches at €3-5. No frills.
  • Restaurante Postiguet Beach. Decent paella (not excellent) at €22-28 per person.
  • Coco's. The one for sunset cocktails. Mojito €8.50, but right by the sea and with a good sunset.

If you like the Postiguet but want fewer people

Walk ten minutes east along the promenade and you reach la Albufereta: a smaller cove, water just as good, fewer parasols. Or take the TRAM for ten minutes and get off at San Juan.
